Massive sinkholes have formed recently across Morris County, New Jersey, including a few that affect the I-80 and Route 287. Traffic havoc has followed, including multiple car accidents that likely wouldn’t have happened had the sinkholes not been there.
Currently, the New Jersey Department of Transportation has announced that both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 80 near Exit 34 will be closed until further notice. The sinkholes causing that closure have been linked to abandoned mines, which could soon produce more sinkholes in the immediate area. Governor Phil Murphy has asked people who live in the area to reduce how often they drive to reduce the risk of more sinkhole-related traffic accidents, even going so far as to suggest that people in the area work from home for at least two months if possible. Discounts are also being offered to people who use the Morris & Essex Line of NJ Transit.
