Preparing Your Car for Winter in New Jersey

Preparing Your Car for Winter in New Jersey

The winter weather has returned and, if the meteorologists’ crystal balls are clear again this year, it looks like we’re in for another especially cold one.

As Parsippany auto accident attorneys, we understand just how important it is to keep your car in a safe condition during the chilliest time of the year. That’s why we’ve put together some helpful hints for preparing your car for winter.

How to Winterize Your Car in New Jersey

Morris County isn’t a place you want to be stuck without a jacket or a heater in the winter months. It’s important to winter-proof your vehicle now in order to avoid getting caught out in the cold with a breakdown or an auto accident later.

The Car Care Council recommends the following steps for preparing your car for winter:

  • Flush your cooling system and install new antifreeze (at least once every two years).
  • If you haven’t replaced your wiper blades in the last six months, do so now. Consider using ones specially designed for winter weather.
  • Check your oil, washer fluid, and filters. Oils and fluids specially formulated to handle cold weather are available and can be a good idea in cold environments like New Jersey’s.
  • Get your regular vehicle tune-up done as soon as possible. It’s not too late to act now before the really wintery weather gets here.
  • Have your brakes, battery, headlights, heater, defroster, exhaust system, and tire pressure checked out. A problem with any of these can cause a real headache (and possible danger) in the winter months.

It’s also a good idea to keep jackets, warm blankets, and an emergency kit inside your car in case you need it. Remember to keep a half tank’s worth of gas in your vehicle at all times — not only does that reduce your risk of getting stuck somewhere but it also keeps moisture from building up or freezing inside the gas lines.

Winter is Wonderful When It’s Safe

The cold might be tough to bear some days, but winter weather really can be a lot of fun. Just be sure to protect yourselves out there. Taking some simple precautions now can pay off in the months ahead.

Bundle up, everybody! Stay safe and have fun.
